Changing engine oil may look like a routine maintenance task, but it exposes your hands to used oil, grease, sharp edges, slippery components and potentially hot surfaces.
The right gloves help reduce skin contact while maintaining the grip and dexterity needed to handle drain plugs, filters and small tools.
For most routine oil changes, nitrile gloves are usually the most practical choice.
Why nitrile?
✓ Good resistance to oil and grease
✓ Better puncture resistance than many thin disposable alternatives
✓ Comfortable fit and good finger dexterity
✓ Textured surfaces can improve grip on oily components
✓ Latex-free options are widely available
For longer jobs, heavier cleaning tasks or repeated exposure, consider reusable, fully coated oil-resistant work gloves. They generally provide greater durability and mechanical protection than thin disposable gloves.
However, not every work glove is suitable for oil:
• Leather gloves can absorb oil and are not a reliable liquid barrier.
• PU-coated gloves may provide excellent dexterity, but partially coated designs can allow oil to reach the skin.
• Latex may deteriorate after prolonged contact with petroleum-based products.
• General-purpose fabric gloves can quickly become saturated.
Before choosing a glove, check:
1. Oil and chemical resistance
2. Proper size and secure fit
3. Grip performance in wet or oily conditions
4. Puncture and abrasion resistance
5. Dexterity for small components
6. Whether the glove is disposable or reusable
One important reminder: oil-resistant gloves are not automatically heat-resistant. Allow the engine and exhaust components to cool before starting work.
Replace disposable gloves immediately if they tear, become heavily contaminated or allow oil inside. Used gloves and oil-contaminated materials should be handled according to local waste regulations.
Good hand protection is not only about keeping your hands clean. It helps mechanics work more safely, confidently and efficiently.
